Light Design has increased its lighting stock with the investment of Claypaky Sharpy Plus fixtures. “We were in the market for a powerful beam spot hybrid fixture that could perform well on a festival stage for our busy summer festival season, but be equally at home during the winter months doing corporate and theatre work ensuring full asset utilisation,” Light Design’s Terry Lewsey opened. “The Sharpy Plus was a perfect fit for us, due to it being the only fixture we had seen that could do both Spot and Beam jobs equally as well and be a true hybrid.” https://issuu.com/mondiale/docs/tpi_jan2020/18…

Formed back in 1961 from the hive of lighting activity in London’s West End for the pioneering lumineers to share ideas, information and opinions, The Association of Lighting Designers has been a staple of the theatre landscape for a number of years. However, with the ever-increasing number of LDs moving from theatre to the live touring sector, the ALD’s Ian Saunders spoke to TPi about the importance of expanding its reach – as well as pushing for diversity within the inner workings of the organisation. https://issuu.com/mondiale/docs/tpi_jan2020/84 Photos: ALD www.ald.org.uk www.stagesight.org
How long has Beat The Street’s US office been in the works for? “We have been planning this adventure for two years, opening the office in Tennessee in August 2019. We plan to have our double-deckers on the road by February 2020.” Why was it the right time to create this new arm of the business? “We were asked by many clients for many years why there were no double-deckers in the USA for the touring industry and, quite frankly, we didn’t have a good answer. The idea has been in my head for quite some time. Having pulled the…
Liverpool, UK-based production specialist Adlib continued its excellent working relationship with popular vocal harmony group The Overtones, supplying lighting equipment and crew to their latest UK tour, supporting LD and set designer Neil Holloway. Adlib has in fact been an equipment supplier for the band since their career took off in 2010, and it’s been a great journey for all involved to see the band’s success. Holloway, now a busy freelance designer working internationally for a diverse range of clients, was working full time for Adlib back in 2010, and that’s also where his association with The Overtones started. A talented group of people belong to the Taunton Amateur Operatic Society. Not only are they skilled thespians, many also excel in costume design. So proud were they of the colourful garb they wove for a recent production of Cats, that they came to rehearsals in their finished show attire. In so doing, they provided Chris Sealy with a wellspring of inspiration to draw upon when lighting their production at the Brewhouse Theatre. “The Cats costumes were amazing,” said Sealy. “I was lucky because the cast wore them to the rehearsals. So when I went to watch, I was able…
DPA’s 4006A omnidirectional microphones were used to great effect recently when producer and engineer Brendon Heinst wanted to capture the rich, velvety sound that is the hallmark of Dutch/Russian classical pianist Helena Basilova. Fearing the microphones he already owned were too ‘bright’ for the task, Heinst contacted DPA’s Benelux distributor, Amptec, who recommended a 5006A Surround Kit consisting of five 4006A microphones, which are carefully factory-matched so that their already low standard tolerances are even closer – within ±0.5 dB. Heinst positioned these next to the piano in the style of a traditional Decca Tree, but with different dimensions based…

The pressure was on for Lighting Designer, Sven Kučinić of LumiLas d.o.o. when Croatian superstar band Prljavo Kazalište decided to stage a momentous concert in Zagreb marking the 30th anniversary of the largest ever music concert in Croatian history, which took place at Zagreb’s Ban Jelačić Square on October 17th 1989 attended by over 250,000 people. Banned by the police and authorities in the then still communist-run state of Yugoslavia – the scent of Croatian independence was in the air and the show went ahead anyway in the face of threats to cut the power. It was a peaceful, emotionally-charged…
