CODA Audio’s reputation for manufacturing robust, weatherproof enclosures is already well-established. All speakers across the range have been developed with specifications that offer high weather resistance as standard, both in terms of exterior and interior features.
Externally, this is achieved by means of wooden multiplex cabinets for outdoor use in accordance with German norm DIN 68705 Part 3/BFU 100 standard, which uses waterproof glue – class D3 according to EN204. All cabinets are also coated with a highly reactive polyurea prepolymer – a substance that is waterproof, strongly adhesive and elastic, and thus far superior to conventional lacquers.
Internally, CODA Audio loudspeakers are also weatherproof as standard. All cone drivers are infused with carbon fibre. CODA’s unique compression driver design utilises its patented rig membrane to completely decouple the sound channel from the magnet system. This approach provides an advanced level of weather protection by precluding the ingress of moisture, dust and dirt into sensitive components.
A measure of CODA Audio’s determination to meet the most extreme challenges possible, comes in the form of its new fixed-connection cable ‘Standard IP55’ variant. By adding a fixed cable, the already robust weather protection of its standard loudspeakers takes another step forward.
For extreme environments – the newly developed Marine Grade 1 (MG1) option, takes things to an entirely new level. MG1 offers maximum protection against freezing cold, scorching heat, continuous rain and snowfall, as well as acidic or salty environments. This option enables users to have total confidence in the permanent deployment of CODA Audio loudspeakers in even the most exceptional conditions.
CODA Audio Tech and Application Support, Sebastian Bähr addressed the subject: “The key to making loudspeaker systems suitable for these particularly challenging applications was found in the interaction of various details. Identifying the potential weak spots came first, followed by meticulous research and exhaustive testing. The results of this analysis then informed our approach to a protection package that we believe sets the standard for the industry.”
The MG1 includes a sealed crossover, protective grille and screws made from stainless steel, a waterproof acoustic gauze instead of acoustic foam and fixed connection cables on industrial-grade Amphenol connectors. All metal parts are surface-treated with cathodic dip painting (KTL process) and powder coated.
“Cathodic dip painting offers the perfect combination of corrosion protection, high quality surface treatment, and protection against environmental influences,” Bähr said. “It gives our products high resistance to mechanical damage, salt water and chemicals, and is complemented by a three-coat epoxy powder primer, which provides additional mechanical durability, UV resistance and acts as another moisture barrier.”
CODA paid very particular attention to the speaker connections, which might be considered to be the weakest link in the chain of components. “We took very special care here. We’ve found a way that uses a high level of security – depending on the product type, the standard IP55 or MG1 products have fixed, fully sealed connection cables or Amphenol connectors. Only with this feature, in contrast to loudspeaker systems with conventional four-pole sockets, is an IP55 rating possible,” Bähr said.
“We’re proud of the work that has gone into making our systems perhaps the most weather-resistant and durable in the world. Whilst our focus in this respect has been on repelling the worst that the elements can throw our way, at no point did we lose sight of the fact that above all, whatever steps we take, our loudspeakers must lead the field in audio quality. We’re confident that they do – anywhere, in any conditions.”
