Backup Tech relies on the goodwill of the industry to fund its support of those working behind the scenes in the entertainment technology industry. The latest fundraisers’ dedication and determination not only help bolster the charity’s own fundraising efforts but are truly inspirational.
Jack Gomm, Project Manager at Perception Live and affectionately known as The Running Tech, is on a constant mission to raise awareness of mental health and addiction while also raising funds for Backup. He organises a multitude of events, playing at gigs and hosting pub quizzes in pubs and clubs around Hertfordshire and London.
On 28 March, he took on the major challenge of running 40 miles from his childhood home in Ivinghoe Aston in Buckinghamshire to his current home in London’s Tooting, raising over £3400 in donations and highlighting the work the charity does to support those in need.
“I understand the importance of Backup, it’s an incredible charity,” he said. “I don’t think people who don’t work in the industry can understand what it’s like and that the people behind the shows are there 10 times longer than the talent. That’s demanding and really takes its toll, I’ve felt it and seen it firsthand. I’ve also been an addict and had mental health problems, so it felt very fitting to take on this challenge, and going from where I grew up to where I live now took me on the same journey in a metaphorical sense. It was tough, but I had a great support team around me, including my mum and my partner. I can’t thank them all enough.”
Core Pro Audio hold a fundraiser at their Core Audio Show each year, where they host a charity raffle with prizes donated by the industry, raising a total of £4,580 for Backup. Joe Jackson, Director of Core Pro Audio explains why supporting Backup is so important.
“We welcomed over 150 attendees to our annual trade show event and were proud to host industry leading manufacturers,” he said. “The day was a chance to come together and learn, but also to celebrate our achievements. Our Network Hub brought people closer and that was made even more special by knowing that we raised for Backup with our raffle!”
PLASA’s BikeFest Spain has become an annual fundraising event, with over £150,000 raised for Backup over the five years it has been running through the incredible spirit and camaraderie of the intrepid riders who take part. Cycling the, at times, challenging route from Valencia to Barcelona in time for the start of the ISE Show, involves grit and determination but, as PLASA’s Nicky Greet said: “Every rider, sponsor and supporter over the past five years has helped strengthen the safety net for our industry through Backup Tech. It’s a powerful reminder of what our community can achieve when it comes together with purpose.”
Finally, Crewsaders’ David Walmsley has begun an ultra-marathon in every sense. Setting out to complete 30 marathons in 30 days, starting on the first of April, he has already run the length of Scotland, crossing the border on April 13th. For David, this challenge is a chance to make a small change in an epic way, by raising awareness of the challenges of faced by those suffering with mental health issues. Through raising money for his chosen charities, Backup Tech, the Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and Mind, David hopes to lend a hand to people who may not have the support network he has benefitted from. Before he set off, he told us a little bit about how it feels to attempt such a huge challenge. More news on David’s epic effort will follow soon, and you can still donate at: www.givewheel.com/fundraising/12316/30-in-30-marathon-challenge/
“We’re so proud of each and every one of our industry family who chooses to do something to support Backup, and we’re always amazed at what they put themselves through to do it,” said Backup Chair, Lee Dennison. “A huge thank you to every single one of you. We couldn’t provide the support we do to those who need it without you. The individuals who step forward to fundraise continue to set the standard for this industry. It’s extraordinary to see, and it’s what makes this industry so special.”
