Carter Fulghum Goes Rogue for Shinedown Tour

CHAUVET Professional Rogue RH1 Hybrid fixtures - Shinedown Attention Attention tour, Todd Kaplan
While on tour to support their sixth studio album, Attention Attention, hard rock band, Shinedown’s Lighting Designer, Carter Fulghum, was told to create more saturated and darker visuals to display the band’s new jarring intensity sound.

With its raw gut-wrenching songs about struggle and redemption, the album, which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, took the multi-platinum quartet’s hard-driving style to a more intense level. To show this Fulghum created a deeply evocative light show with low backlight and side light. To balance the penetrating mood created by these fixtures, he added an electrifying level of extra intensity with the help of 38 CHAUVET Professional Rogue RH1 Hybrid fixtures, supplied by Bandit Lites.

Flying the Chauvet 330W moving beam spot fixtures on 4 8-inch by 9-inch, diamond-shaped pods, Fulghum used them for downlighting, specials and powerful colour accents that dramatised key moments in the concert.

“We have eight Rogues arranged in two rows of four in the centre of each pod,” he said: “Using them to cover the stage, we create a powerful impression. Their gobos and prisms are adding an extra sense of texture, which is important to set the kind of dramatic mood we’re after.  Of course, we can change that mood quickly, especially when we go from a beam to wash. The brightness was also important to us, given the level of impact that we want our lighting to have on the audience.”

In addition to the 38 Chauvet Rogue fixtures being flown on the overhead pods, Fulghum positioned six units around the drum kit. These fixtures were used for sweeps, aerial lighting and visual amplification for the drum solos that punctuated the band’s performance. Although the overall look of Fulghum’s light show remained consistently intense throughout the tour, he did change his rig, lighting plan, and the number of fixtures used depending on the venue.

“Making the rig versatile enough to go from arena to shed to festivals is a challenge,” said Fulghum: “The pods help us navigate our way through different venues because they’re very flexible in terms of where they can hang.  So even though we change gear sometimes, the Rogue RH1s are always with the rig.”

While lighting the shows Fulghum had help from his dedicated tour crew to ensure everything ran smoothly. “Like anything that succeeds, there’s been a great team effort behind this tour,” said Fulghum. “I am especially grateful for the support I received. The people involved in this tour made me feel very confident.” So, while the music and light show on the Attention Attention tour evoked some fearsome moods, Carter Fulghum had nothing to be afraid of when it came to having a killer show every night.
