Funktion-One is a very British company renowned for the controlled energy of its loudspeaker systems, especially in its bass enclosures which are literally moving audiences with unprecedented levels of quality vibration.
To date, Funktion-One’s large scale bass systems have been focused around work with 18" drivers in the form of F218s — with their unique and highly efficient loading technique — and the Infrabass/Infrahorn systems for extreme low end reinforcement down to 30Hz and below.
In 2006, with F1's access to advanced materials and Tony Andrews’ heightened understanding of loudspeaker and enclosure tuning, he revisited his original 21” concept. This work resulted in a new product with dramatically increased performance. Furthermore, by substituting neodymium for ceramic, the magnet weight has been reduced from 28.5kg to 11.5kg which opened up the possibility of a double 21” enclosure. This resulting F221 is an extremely convincing bass enclosure combining real depth, upper bass speed and high efficiency.
It can be used in a multitude of system applications ranging from use with Resolution 2s, 4s and 5s through to use in Dance Stack systems. The F221s will be used on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival this June. They are also available self-powered and an F121 single version is also available.
RM18
The new RM18 tri-axial stage monitor from Funktion-One is a radical departure from the standard 15" and compression-driver configuration, delivering a significant performance advantage over conventional monitors.
The tri-axial arrangement comprises an ultra-fast 18" driver with 5" coil and Neodymium magnet and a special 5" driver with a built-in HF compression driver passively crossed-over at 9kHz. The 700Hz crossover point and the natural materials used in the mid-device give a previously unheard clarity and definition to the vocal range. The bass response of the 18" driver also makes it well suited to use as a drum monitor.
As usual with Funktion-One’s driver skills, built-in EQ correction is not necessary leaving the enclosure phase coherent with lots of headroom, presenting a great canvas to the monitor engineer and performers on stage. The conical dispersion is 70°, with the enclosure measuring 17” high x 30" wide x 20" deep, and weighing in at 35kg.
The RM18 has already seen full-touring action with Audio Plus on the latest KT Tunstall tour and is receiving rave reviews from experienced monitor engineers.
