VERTIGO

Rigging and Trussing

Vertigo is due to launch three new roof structures at the PLASA show in September, which will be introduced into the company%u2019s rental stock following recent successful trials.

All three structures have been designed in response to specific client demands and have multiple potential applications across the events and exhibitions market.

The company’s first foray into temporary outdoor structures came with the BAFTA Awards at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden this spring. The brief was not for a conventional roof structure, but for one that could follow the contours of Bow Street, providing weather protection for VIP guests as they made their way along the red carpet.

The elegant and impressive structure was a great success, despite the huge challenges of installing a system 80m long and in places spanning 15m.

This system was designed and fabricated in-house at Vertigo with three-part aluminium roof trusses designed to fit an existing 2m grid system. The modular three-part roof trusses form a single apex roof but are designed to reconfigure into three different profiles: the B10, M7 and F25.

The next outing for the system was to create a VIP viewing platform alongside the Thames for the Spanish fashion house, Mango. Further developments were made to the product by raising the roof on a self-climbing system, allowing roof skins to be installed at ground level. The M7 profile created a 25m x 10m open span which proved to be a perfect cover for a panoramic viewing platform.

For the Falklands 25th Anniversary Commemoration at Horse Guards Parade (contracted by Jack Morton Worldwide), Vertigo produced the F25 profile which provided a 34m x 10m weather cover to the VIP and Royal Box.

Again, the aesthetics of the Vertigo RS system and its ability to create a cantilevered clear view roof proved extremely successful and provides an elegant alternative to more utilitarian roofing systems.

The B10 is effectively a static (i.e. not self-climbing) single apex roof spanning 12m with roof trusses at 4m centres. As with all of the Vertigo RS systems it incorporates a 2m2 modular grid.

The M7 and F25 are both self-climbing structures allowing loading of equipment and roof skins at ground level. The M7 is a centre apex roof with an overall span of 10m with a 5m cantilever to the front to reduce viewing obstructions caused by the legs. The F25 is similar to the M7 but has a lower profile roof with an offset apex and a curved profile nosing to the front and back. All roof skins come in white as standard but can be ordered to client specification at an additional cost.

The roof structures’ exact loading properties will be determined by location, weather conditions, and leg height; all structures are supplied with calculations and are configured to the client’s specification.
