“It was important for me to move to a company that operated to the same high standards...”
Profession:
Head of Sales & Marketing, ES Group
Date & place of birth:
December 28 1972; Manchester, UK
Your first job after full-time education?
I was lucky enough to be part of the opening team at Euro Disney which was an extraordinary experience and my first foray into the theatre of events. It gave me a great grounding in the world of hospitality and the importance of attention to detail to create the ultimate customer experience.
What led to you into the world of rock’n’roll catering?
It was a chance meeting with Tony Laurenson of Eat To The Beat (and MD of the Global Infusion Group) at an industry dinner. He gave me an insight into a whole new world and from that moment on, I knew that one day I would work for him and I am so glad that I did.
You were with Eat To The Beat for seven years... what would you consider to be your favourite memory or achievement during that period?
There are so many great memories... being part of an award-winning team is always an amazing feeling, to know that people value what you do and want to show their appreciation.
Having the opportunity to be part of world class events is pretty special and memories such as Live 8 will stay with me. Being part of the team to investigate new international opportunities such as Dubai and China was an incredible experience and I will enjoy watching the company go from strength to strength.
What inspired you to make the significant move from catering to transport, staging and special projects, with your new role at the ES Group in east London?
As someone who likes to take on new challenges, I felt it was time to move on although it was important for me to move to a company that operated to the same high standards and had the same passion for what they do.
Through the industry I got to know some of the team at ES Group over a number of years and always admired their work, so when an opportunity to join the team presented itself, I didn’t need much convincing.
You were present at the recent TPi Awards 2009, at which both Eat To The Beat and EST (part of the ES Group) were winners. How did it feel knowing that within a week you’d be leaving one and joining the other?
The feeling could only be compared, I assume, to how a mother feels when she has two gifted twins!
What do you hope to achieve for the ES Group and indeed yourself through your new position?
After 35 years in the business, ES Group has built an impressive reputation and I am keen to work with the team to further enhance this and to explore new opportunities. Two key areas are the impending office opening in Qatar and London 2012. With the offices being located in the Olympic Zone, we are perfectly placed and fully intend to explore the opportunities available.
Is there anyone you would describe as a mentor?
My Dad... he always has such a pragmatic approach to everything and believes that nothing is beyond reach.
What occupies your free time?
Relaxing with an apple mojito after a day spent shoe shopping. Well, that would be my ideal way of spending a day off although for some reason it never quite happens that way!
Your favourite record of all-time?
‘I Am The Resurrection’ by The Stone Roses. It brings back happy memories of the Hacienda in Manchester.
What was the first gig you attended?
Simply Red at the Manchester Apollo in 1985. It was the first of many — as a youngster I spent all my money on records and gigs. It never occured to me back then that there was a whole world behind the scenes and, of course, I had no idea whatsoever that one day I would be a part of that industry.
What was the last gig you attended as a paying punter?
To be honest I really can’t remember although I bought Dolly Parton tickets for my parents a couple of years ago... does that count?
What would be your advice to a teenage Liz Madden?
Don’t be afraid of the unknown... and always wear good shoes!
