Sennheiser - Wanted For Excellent Sound And RF Stability
13 May 2011 - 12:38 GMT
March and April saw latest boy band sensation The Wanted undertake their first headline tour, with 12 dates in theatres and arenas throughout the UK.
Despite the difficulty of getting the quintet’s voices heard over the shrieking of thousands of young girls, Sennheiser equipment ensured that they delivered the goods.
The tour played arenas and larger theatre venues and will be followed by a number of summer outdoor shows and festival appearances, all featuring Sennheiser’s ew 500-935 G3 wireless microphones and ew 300 G3 GB in-ear monitors.
“I’ve used Sennheiser kit for the last 12 years and have always been very happy with the products and the company’s support,” says the band’s front of house engineer Andrew Thornton. “With The Wanted, up until this tour we'd been using various radio mics - basically whatever people could provide us with - although always favouring Sennheiser 935s.
He continues, “After receiving the G3 935s, both monitor engineer Ryan McLean and myself were very pleased with the improvement in results - a smoother high end, more level before feedback and no handling noise. The boys in the band loved the heavier feel to the handheld and noticed a real jump in clarity in their IEMs.”
“As well as great sound quality, the mics provide excellent off axis rejection, which is invaluable when working with a group singing in front of several thousand screaming fans,” adds Ryan. “Both they and the IEM beltpacks have an exceptionally robust RF signal. Any unwanted RF noise in the IEMs due to signal drop can cause distraction to the musicians, so it is great to have the confidence in your RF equipment in situations were there is distance, metal structures and video walls - all of which can create unwanted glitches in the sound.”
Andrew agrees, saying, “RF wise we've had no issues - not one drop out or change to a spare during the whole rehearsal and touring period.”
Sennheiser’s Wireless Systems Manager software has also proved a hit with both Ryan and Andrew, making for fast, easy setup at shows where time is often extremely limited.
“The G3 range is super easy to reprogram using the Wireless Systems Manager software, it saves so much time with scanning and syncing,” says Ryan. “The personal service we receive from Sennheiser UK is also very reassuring. Being able to call Mark Saunders for advice, with him always having a quick solution to any problem, gives me great peace of mind if issues ever do arise.
“Both Mark and Phil Cummings are always on the end of the phone to help,” confirms Andrew. “They offer a level of support that is unheard of from anyone else.”
