Six Major UK Music Venues Awarded Industry Green Certification
28 February 2011 - 16:54 GMT
Julie’s Bicycle, the not-for-profit organisation working closely with the creative industries to make environmental sustainability a core component of their business operations, has announced the award of their prestigious Industry Green (IG) certificates to six major UK music venues.
The IG certification scheme recognises commitment to reduce carbon emissions and leadership for the creative industries on climate change action.
The six latest venues to receive IG certification are:
• Capital FM Arena Nottingham
• Wembley Stadium
• Cardiff International Arena
• Motorpoint Arena Sheffield
• O2 Apollo Manchester
• Southampton Guildhall.
All of these venues been rigorously audited by Julie’s Bicycle and have met the stringent criteria on which the IG Certificate is awarded.
They join Wembley Arena, Aldeburgh, Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House, Arcola and The Sage Gateshead.
The IG certification scheme encourages creative organisations to sign up to ongoing improvement of their environmental performance through a process that is specifically tailored for the creative industries.
The programme measures carbon emissions, energy, water, waste and travel alongside organisational commitment, improvement and communication. It is an industry-endorsed brand, and the certifications are scientifically verified by the Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University.
These initiatives and achievements send clear, positive messages from a community of influential organisations to the rest of the creative industries (and wider audience of artists and fans) about the importance of acting to improve environmental performance and build a sustainable, low-carbon future for the creative industries.
Alison Tickell, Director of Julies Bicycle said, “We are delighted to announce the award of IG certificates to six of the UK’s most high profile live music venues. All have demonstrated their strong commitment to reducing their environmental impact and join a community of creative industry leaders that are setting the standard for environmentally responsible business practices through their transparency and accountability.”
Paul Latham, Live Nation International COO said: “We at Live Nation Entertainment believe that it is vitally important to pay more than lip-service to addressing the issues before us. Hence we have been major supporters of Julie’s Bicycle since inception and try to do our best to both follow their guidance, and lead on initiatives. By engaging dedicated staff throughout our venues and festivals as “environmental champions” we hope to improve our performance wherever we can. Live Nation Entertainment is happy to share our learnings with anyone in our industry as the global ecological challenge goes way beyond competitive advantage.”
Roger Maslin, Managing Director of Wembley Stadium, said, “Environmental sustainability is a core business objective for Wembley and we are delighted to have achieved the Industry Greening mark in recognition of our efforts. As with all organisations we have more to achieve, but we are proud to be making real, quantifiable progress"
Capital FM Arena CEO, Geoff Huckstep and former Chair of the National Arenas Association, said: “It’s important for businesses in the creative industries to voluntarily lead the way on climate change action. Nowhere is this more important than in venues where large numbers of the public can be made aware of the issues, solutions and benefits of collectively reducing our environmental impact. At the Capital FM Arena Nottingham we are aware of our role of responsibility and will endeavour to work with our staff, customers and touring artists to communicate the need for action against climate change; as well as continuing to work towards improving our energy efficiency as an arena venue.”
Just some of the environmental initiatives already adopted by these venues include setting up internal ‘green teams’, introducing environmental policies, improving rates of recycling, installing energy-efficient lighting, sourcing lower-carbon energy such as combined heat and power (CHB), and sharing their environmental responsibilities with incoming bands and production managers.
