With just over 600 days to go to the start of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is calling on anyone arranging events in the capital in 2012 to register now on a unique online events calendar, The Culture Diary, or start talking to their local borough council.
We want the world to know about all the fantastic events taking place in our city in this exciting year, so don’t miss the opportunity to make sure your event has the best chance of going ahead.
In a busy and exciting year, the city's public and emergency services need to plan ahead of 2012 to allocate resources to support planned events, to support the 2012 Games and keep our great city functioning successfully. By collecting comprehensive information in advance, everyone can work together to plan the variety of concerts, street parties, business conferences and sporting fixtures that will bring London to life in 2012.
Event organisers have two channels by which to provide information:
• The Culture Diary (www.theculturediary.com) is the first of its kind and has been created by the Mayor in conjunction with Visit London. Organisers of cultural and community events should register by 31st December 2010 to make the most of this chance to showcase what London has to offer. This planning tool has been developed to collect and collate information of cultural events and activities, whatever the size, taking place across London’s 33 boroughs throughout 2012.
• Organisers of events that are not cultural, such as sporting fixtures and business conferences, should inform their local borough (www.london.gov.uk/eventsin2012)
Information collated via both channels will be used by the city’s public and emergency services to ensure the resources needed, including transport and policing are in place. It is important that users register any events, even if only provisional at this stage, that are planned to take place between 1st May and 31st October 2012, so as many events as possible have the best possible chance of going ahead during this exceptionally busy period.
From concerts to community fetes, event organisers can also use the online service to identify and avoid clashes or foster any potential collaboration for events and marketing with other users; additionally those who register before the deadline can use The Culture Diary as a networking opportunity in 2011 and 2012, as London prepares for the Games.
What’s more, going beyond logistics and planning for organisations or individuals, The Culture Diary will collate the information needed for a public facing campaign in 2012 so that Londoners and visitors to the capital know exactly what is going on to celebrate this momentous time in London's history.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "There’s no doubt that London will be the place to be in 2012, whether you live here or travel in to experience the huge array of events taking place in the most exciting year of the capital's long history. We want to ensure the plethora of planned events and celebrations can go ahead safely and we need to start planning now. So sign up to The Culture Diary or start talking to your borough and help us showcase our spectacular city."
Speaking on behalf of the city's key public and emergency services Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison MBE, National Olympics Security Coordinator for the Metropolitan Police said: “Keeping London safe and secure during what promises to be a fantastic summer in London in 2012 is top of all our agendas. What we want is for the true magic and spectacle that the Olympics and Paralympics brings with them to turn our capital into a site of celebration. We fully support the Mayor’s call for event organisers to start working with us now. By registering planned events we can make sure that our finite resources are best managed and events happen safely and securely during this very busy and exciting period.”
Peter Hendy, London’s Transport Commissioner, said: “We want 2012 to be a memorable year for everyone living, working in and visiting the capital and planning ahead is key. Knowing when events and festivities will be happening will ensure we can keep London moving and that everyone can enjoy all that this great city will have to offer.”
