Band Buy Venue
30 July 2010 11.51 BST
Celebrated Bristol art-rock collective, The Blue Aeroplanes have bought legendary live music venue, The Fleece. “We hatched the plan to buy The Fleece on a 747 half way to Texas en route to SXSW. As soon as we landed back in the UK we hot-footed it to the estate agents,” said the band's Chris Sharp.
The nationally renowned venue had struggled of late under a corporate ownership favouring tribute and covers bands. Now the band, all knowledgeable and passionate musicians, are returning it to the cutting edge of popular music.
Serious money has already been invested into the 200 year old Grade II listed building. A new lighting system illuminates the stage where everyone from Radiohead, PJ Harvey, and Muse to Coldplay, Oasis and The Killers have famously rocked audiences.
The biggest change of all is the philosophy : “If we were in it for the money, we wouldn’t be cancelling tribute bands,” said Sharp, with the belief that a venue run by musicians will be a winner for both artists and gig-goers. Upcoming gigs include the likes of Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, OK Go & Sage Francis.
There'll be an official launch party on Saturday October 2 with bands, DJs and a VIP press bar, proving once and for all that a band can organise a piss-up in a brewery!
