WIcreations Covers Best Of Belgium With The Shelter

19 July 2010 13.09 BST

Wicreations designed a roof to cover some of the 35,681 spectators that showed up to see a tennis game between Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams on July 8 in the King Boudouin Stadium in Brussels, which was a world record.

The game was part of the BNP Paribas Best of Belgium show that brought together the best of Belgian tennis players and Belgian music (Justine Henin was supposed to play but she got injured, so Serena helped out).

To protect the ladies against the ever present threat of rain in Belgium Wicreations was asked to design a roof 10 metres above the tennis ground with uninterrupted sight lines from the stands. This meant that towers or columns were out of the question. Therefore the team designed a huge canvas (1,500 square metres) that consisted of three parts, each weighing more the 500kg.

The canvas was fixed to the roof of the stadium by means of steel cables and held down with contra weights. It could stand winds up to 8 Beaufort. The shelter could also be supported by a custom made ground support, also by the hand of WIcreations. For this structure a special aluminum truss (1,4m) was developed. In this configuration, the shelter gave room for 4,000 people who wanted to sit out of the sun or rain.
