Sennheiser Proves Invaluable For Mr Hudson
18 June 2010 15.07 BST
Musician and producer Mr Hudson has just completed a successful headline UK May tour and is now the support for Jay Z on his sold out arena shows, before performing at a selection of festivals including Isle of Wight and Wireless. His monitor equipment already featured a Sennheiser G2 in ear system, which, says monitor engineer and stage manager Jimmy Nicholson, are an industry standard.
But when Jimmy started working with Mr Hudson in April of this year, his familiarity with the company’s equipment prompted the addition of Sennheiser microphones to the audio inventory.
“We are using a combination of G3 and G2 935 mics, and G2
IEM systems. In addition, I’m using a Net-1 and a laptop running
Wireless Systems Manager,” said Jimmy.
“I specified all the equipment in use except the IEM systems, which Mr
Hudson already owned, in the absence of the G3 option, the G2 IEMs would have been my choice anyway. The G2 IEM systems are a standard in the truest sense of the word. So much so, that when someone mentions IEMs, the G2 system is the reassuring image that immediately springs to mind.”
Jimmy’s choice of Sennheiser equipment is a result of working with the company on previous projects, including Jamiroquai as FOH tech, and both Calvin Harris and Chipmunk on monitor mixing duties. “It seems that whenever I start on something new, my first call is to Sennheiser UK’s Phil Cummings, and it's inevitably to ask a favour!” he said.
“We were trying out a new G3 935 on Ben's vocal (Mr Hudson himself), and had a G2 935 for Joy Joseph who provides backing vocals and some lead vocal on several songs. I was able to directly A/B both versions of the mic, and there is a definite improvement in the sound and also, importantly, in the functionality of the G3 series. Easy IR syncing, expanded sensitivity options, and the ability to connect to Wireless Systems Manager without a Net-1 are all a welcome bonus on top of the noticeably improved high frequency detail and overall clarity.”
Jimmy specified the Net-1 and WSM software after having previous experience with them working for audio rental company Britannia Row Productions.
“They prove invaluable when multiple RF systems are in use,” he said, “and with new firmware updates, give me a quick and simple method of scanning local RF conditions, and creating frequency plots to suit.”
Of equal value to the quality of the equipment in use is the support Jimmy receives from Phil and the rest of the team at Sennheiser UK.
He concluded: “With every project I work on, I know I can rely on the team for everything from technical advice to getting hold of an RF-sized mic clip on a Sunday in the middle of nowhere. Invaluable!”
