The location was the Fareham Folk Festival, which is the biggest indoor folk and Celtic music festival in the UK, welcoming over 300 performers from all over the world across the four-day event.
 
Audio for the Fareham Folk Festival has been handled by MIDAS ProSound for the last 15 years. Given the number of new distribution partnerships that have been announced recently with sister company, Red Square Audio, including of course the most recent with French loudspeaker manufacturer APG, MIDAS ProSound’s Paul Nicholson decided to put in a completely new system this year, both at FOH and monitors.
 
“It was a good decision!” he said with a grin. “We’ve always been congratulated on the quality of the sound for this event, but this year we broke all our records! The same was true for Andy Reeves who was in charge of monitor world and really enjoyed his new APG SMX15s.”
 
Andy Reeves was in full agreement. “We had a total of eight SMX15s on stage, and I have to say they are fantastic; clear sounding and very stable right out of the packing case, with enough power handling to deal easily with even the most demanding bands. The software control is also great; being able to shape the sound exactly using the eight-way parametric EQ is fantastic, especially as it can be done in real time while the speakers are working. Another unique feature is the magnetic bar which enables you to select five different angles for the cabinet. We used this to great effect as many of the bands were standing or seated or sometimes a mixture of both. All we had to do was snap the bar into a different position for either a 30 or 45 degree angle. I don’t know of any other monitor that sounds so good and is so versatile. It’s an excellent product.”
