dBTechnologies DVA Tops Shanghai World Expo

24 May 2010 17.14 BST

Loudspeaker manufacturer dBTechnologies’ celebrated DVA line array series has been chosen for use in the Venezuela area, one of 240 countries’ and organisations’ exhibitions at the six-month long World Expo in Shanghai this year, expected to attracted some 70 million visitors.

“A powerful, yet small system, the DVA range was ideal for the Venezuela Pavilion theatre,” explained Shelly Xiao, general manager of dBTechnologies distributor, Sharp Dragon. “The digital self powered line array fitted the bill perfectly: lightweight, not too obtrusive and it sounds excellent.”

The system comprised 12 flown T4 full range cabinets arrayed six on each side within the arc-shaped ceiling, two ground-stacked S10 powered subwoofers fitted with onboard SDD delay modules, two dBTechnologies Arena 15 passive cabinets to support the centre sound and a DSX 2040 controller, providing even coverage across the venue.

Using plastic housings with 420 Watts of digital amplification coupled to RCF neodymium speakers, the DVA T4 weighs in at 13.2kg. Apart from the obvious advantage for handling and transport, this also makes flying possible where under normal circumstances the trussing may not be strong enough. An array of six T4 modules therefore weighs less than 100kg.

“The DVA system fitted in to the shape of the theatre beautifully and gave no problems of weight or size,” confirmed the general manager of Baokun Electronic Technology Ltd, winner of the contract to provide and install the sound system. The official opening of the 286-seat theatre was celebrated on May 2 with a grand music performance. “The clear and full sound of the system brought the place to life.

“dBTechnologies distributor, Sharp Dragon went out of their way to provide products on time and provided an engineer to help install the system, which went in very smoothly,” continued Baokun’s general manager. “We will certainly be using dBTechnologies products in future projects.”

Covering a total of 3,000sq m and hailed as one of the most outstanding contributions at the World Expo, the Venezuelan exhibition area is in the shape of a figure eight, a symbolic number to both the Chinese and Venezuelans, the latter recently incorporating eight ‘stars of Bolvar’ into their national flag. The structure is designed in the geometric shape of “Mobius strip” or inverted cylinder and many traditional aspects of Venezuela’s history and culture acknowledging the country’s indigenous people, as well as the modern day urban-dwellers will be depicted here.

There is an emphasis on reproducing the style of a number of ethnic residents such as the “Shapono Yanomami” (forest people) or displaying the “Churuata Yekuana” traditional homes of the Yekuana tribe. The Yanomami tribe have thrived in the rainforests for thousands of years and perform in the theatre in a traditional way, whilst today’s life is represented amongst other presentations with performances by the Venezuelan children’s orchestra in the theatre on Venezuela day: July 5.
