Music Industry Signs Open Letter On Climate Change

08 December 2009 15.37 BST

The UK music industry has added its voice to the call for an effective global climate governance framework at the UN Climate Change summit in Copenhagen.

Signed by over 100 of the industry's most senior, influential and forward-thinking leaders,  the open letter has been co-ordinated by Julie's Bicycle, a not-for-profit company established in 2007 to unite and support the UK music industry in responding to climate change. Julie's Bicycle works with all parts of the industry, including labels, managers, agents, artists, suppliers, promoters, venues and retailers.

Julie's Bicycle chairman Tony Wadsworth said: “Thanks everybody who showed amazing support in signing this open letter. Alison is in Copenhagen with Board member Professor Diana LIverman, Director of the ECI, who is involved in the actual negotiations. Alison will present it at the Culture Futures symposium hosted by the Danish Cultural Institute with representatives of cultural organisations from all over the world. We are really proud of the commitment  that the UK music industry is showing on this issue and I can honestly say that there is no other creative sector anywhere else in the world that has come together, across an entire country, in this way. I will be hosting a breakfast in early February for all those who signed up to thank you for your support for our work."

Julie's Bicycle believes outcomes of the summit should include:
• an effective global climate governance framework;
• consensus on scientifically informed targets which reflect the depth of the problem;
• targets are widened beyond the Kyoto signatories;
• realistic delivery timetables;
• financial mechanisms to stimulate extensive infrastructure investment in decarbonisation;
• an equitable global price for carbon;
• fair mechanisms and resources provided to involve all countries, particularly those suffering from the effects of climate change now, in both mitigation and adaptation.

The company is launching an Industry Green Spring, starting in January 2010 where signatories are taking responsibility for their carbon emissions; many people are signing up to the Industry Green Framework which commits you to a 24 month programme of carbon reduction. The music industry has global reach and can unleash imagination and passion like few other industries. We can help our political leaders bring about the global transformation required and therefore urge that the best interests of our planet lie at the heart of the Copenhagen negotiations.
