PR Lighting dominates famous Cosquin Festival

19 May 2009 09.20 BST

One of the most famous folk music events in Argentina (and the largest in Latin America) is the National Folklore Festival of Cosquín.

The service and distribution company Deligio Iluminación became involved back in the event back in 2006, bringing it to life with PR Lighting’s Pilot 1200 (wash and spot) luminaires, and also the Pilot 575, which they distribute in Argentina.

Four years later they are still providing the lighting design — but are using predominantly PR Lighting fixtures to even greater effect.

This year’s Festival comprised 88 moving heads, with six PR Lighting Century Color 2500 architectural fixtures and compact Design 250 projectors. “But most importantly,” said Pablo Deligio, “we used 48 PR Lighting 700 XL spots which left all the artists’ lighting operators amazed at the superiority of the optical path and CMY colour mixing.”

This will have come as no surprise to Nestor Deligio, who was responsible for the scenic design using WYSIWYG design software, and producing final renderings in conjunction with brother Pablo. A technical staff of six from Deligio Iluminación then supported the show, which was run off three Avolites Pearl consoles.

The National Folklore Festival of Cosquin has been running since 1961, lasting over nine days and presenting traditional Argentine culture, street theatre and national arts and crafts alongside the music and dance throughout the town of Cosquín, situated in the tourist area of Punilla Valley in the province of Cordoba.

Making reference to “the nine moons Cosquín” it begins with the famous cry "Aquííí Cosquíííínnnn," which marks the opening of each festival, and was originally invented by Dr. Alejandro Guindo. July Márbiz, presenter of the historic festival, adopted the cry and carried the tradition forward.

The event has grown steadily over the years and in 2001 a new arena was constructed measuring 50 meters long, on an 830 square meter site. The stage can rotate through 180 degrees to speed up the procession of artists loading on and off the stage.

With this new infrastructure, Cosquín currently has one of the largest venues in Latin America — with a capacity of nearly 10,000 spectators.
