Drive takes Alternative Miss World 2009 for a spin at the Roundhouse
As Brian Eno once remarked, ‘The Alternative Miss World should be entered for the Turner Prize!’
The Alternative Miss World - a beauty contest like no other – ricocheted back into the limelight on Saturday 2 May as Drive Productions brought their creative production expertise to premier London venue, the Roundhouse.
The curious and hilarious brainchild of feted artist and designer, Andrew Logan, this year’s pageant was the 12th outing of the Crufts-inspired competition.
The world-class alternative event, which took as its theme ‘The Elements’, was a challenge for Drive who had a cast and crew in excess of 400 to wrangle on the night.
Pictured with cultural icon and host Ruby Wax on Saturday, Director of Drive Productions, Ben Fender, said: “It was an honour to be asked to produce the Alternative Miss World show at the Roundhouse this year. The greatest challenge was to retain the creative and slightly chaotic aspect of the show that has become part of its brand while introducing strong production and stage management techniques for this surreal and eccentric event.
We feel that we achieved this well by drawing in some of the best stage management and technical team available who all have show production experience from a range of backgrounds including fashion, circus and festival stages.
Andrew Logan and Michael Davis were brilliant to work with and with the additional aspect of including a film unit to capture every moment it was a fun and challenging project to produce.”
Commenting on the production values brought to the event on this occasion, Andrew Logan enthused: “ We are most impressed with Ben and the whole production team; the set up was absolutely fantastic and it was a great achievement.”
Since its original conception in 1972 the Alternative Miss World is credited with bringing Leigh Bowery to London and for inspiring artists from Brian Eno to David Hockney.
This year’s event was a jewel in the crown of the Alternative Miss World’s infamous history. Featuring over 20 hardcore exhibitionists, the contestants fiercely competed for the title in rounds celebrating Daywear, Swimwear and Eveningwear for the ultimate accolade from a judging panel including Zandra Rhodes, Time Out publisher Tony Elliott, writer Molly Parkin and legendary movie maestro Ken Russell.
