Convocation In Qatar Followed By One Republic Concert
June 2012
This year’s Senior Convocation was a ceremonial graduation day for several Qatar Foundation universities in Doha was held at the QNCC (Qatar National Convention Centre) in Qatar on 8th May 2012.
The event organisers, QMDI (Qatar MICE Development Institute) involved Delta Sound in the convocation event as the audio designers/suppliers/operators.
After guests and students arrival to the venue the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) greeted them playing in the main reception area. The audience then walked thru to the main event, which took place in the conference hall. The QPO was sub mixed on a DiGiCo SD8, a DigiDesign Profile had a mixture of Sennheiser and Shure radio microphones as well as Shure 412 lectern microphones and Video playback feeds.
The Profile had overall control of the PA, which comprised of 24 x L’Acoustics dV-Dosc and 6 x L’Acoustics SB218. A Lexicon PCM96 provided the reverb. On the arrival of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, who was one of several keynote speakers, the national anthem was played by the orchestra and was accompanied by members of the Qatar Leadership Academy Choir.
A similar arrangement was used with the Siwar children choir when they sang the Education City Anthem.
The QPO remained on the stage in the reception area throughout the event and provided all the remainder of the music for the event. Pictures of the orchestra playing were relayed onto large screens in the conference hall.
Delta supplied Al Jazeera TV with multiple record feed options.
One Republic Live
Duties for Delta did not end with the ceremony night closure. The organizers brought an award winning band 'One Republic' to perform following night as a celebration for the graduates. With the stipulation that the concert had to be in the same room as the ceremony, with an expected crowd of 2000 people, a whole new approach had to be taken. With expectations high and a crazy turnaround time, Delta met this challenge.
The system provided for the gig was L'Acoustics, with PA hangs each consisted of 8 V-Dosc with 3 dV-Dosc down and 16 SB218s across the front (using 80Hz Sub ARC configuration). Both FOH and Monitor Desks where DigiDesign Profile and Venue respectively, running Waves V8 plugins.
The band used no wedges on stage and relied on Sennheiser G3 rack with JH Audio to create their desired IEM mix.
“Ceremony and the concert were well supported and the new venue, The QNCC, functioned well.” Agreed both Delta`s lead sound engineers Martyn Ward and David Gibson responsible for the event.
